Provenance & reference

Sources & data

SnapDestinations is a static site: all travel data is collected offline, checked, and shipped as version-controlled files. Nothing on this page is aspirational — it describes the sources currently in the build.

In use

Sources we use today

Wikidata

Used for
Destination identity; Coordinates; Country; Alternative names
Licence
CC0 1.0 (public domain dedication) (terms)
Commercial use
Permitted. No attribution obligation, but we record the entity anyway.
How we process it
Entity IDs were resolved and checked by hand, then coordinates, labels, country and aliases were read from the entity data endpoint by an offline script and written to static files.

GeoNames (cities15000 export)

Used for
Independent identity cross-check; Alternative place-name spellings
Licence
CC BY 4.0 (terms)
Required attribution
Place-name data by GeoNames (CC BY 4.0)
Commercial use
Permitted with attribution, which is given here and on /methodology.
How we process it
An offline script reads the cities15000 export once and compares it with the identity index already built from Wikidata. A record only counts as a match when a name agrees exactly after normalisation and the coordinates lie within 25 km of ours. Accepted alternative spellings must look like variants of the same name and be unique across the whole index; anything that would create ambiguity is discarded. No places, coordinates or travel data are taken from GeoNames, and the resolver still refuses to guess between same-named places.

Open-Meteo Historical Weather Archive

Used for
Typical daytime and night-time temperature by month; Monthly rainfall and number of wet days; Daily sunshine and daylight hours; Year-to-year variability
Licence
Weather data licensed CC BY 4.0 (terms)
Required attribution
Historical weather data by Open-Meteo.com (CC BY 4.0)
Commercial use
Open-Meteo's free API is for non-commercial use. SnapDestinations uses it while the product is non-commercial and carries no advertising or affiliate monetisation. Before any commercial use, access must be moved onto terms that permit it — Open-Meteo currently requires a paid plan for commercial use and Professional or higher for historical APIs.
How we process it
Daily historical reanalysis values for 2015-2024 were downloaded once, offline, for one named base locality per destination. Values were aggregated into per-month statistics (means of daily maxima and minima, mean monthly rainfall total, mean count of days with at least 1 mm, mean daily sunshine and daylight hours, and the standard deviation of daily maxima as a variability signal). Only the derived statistics ship with the site. The production site makes no weather API calls.

SnapDestinations editorial research

Used for
Destination summaries; Go for / think twice if; Traveller fit classifications; Cost level classifications; Practical interpretation and trade-offs; Alternatives and comparison conclusions
Licence
Original work by SnapDestinations
Commercial use
Our own content.
How we process it
Written by SnapDestinations as an editorial judgment, informed by verified facts and research. These are opinions about suitability, not measurements. They are never expressed as numeric scores.

Excluded

Sources we deliberately do not use

Wikivoyage

Its CC BY-SA ShareAlike obligations add licensing complexity, and our destination pages are meant to be original SnapDestinations work rather than a rewritten travel guide.

Booking platforms and review sites (Booking.com, Tripadvisor, Expedia, Google Places)

Scraping their data is not permitted and their content is not reusable.

Crowd and visitor-number datasets

We found no dataset with the coverage and reuse terms needed for all seed destinations, so SnapDestinations shows no crowd levels at all rather than estimating them.

Flight, hotel and restaurant prices

Live pricing requires commercial feeds we do not have. We therefore publish no prices and no flight durations, only editorial cost levels with the reasoning shown.

Travel information

Who supplies the travel facts, destination by destination

Photography has had per-file provenance from the start. This is the equivalent for the practical claims on destination pages: the organisation behind the information, the kind of body it is, and what it supports here. Where a detail changes often — timetables, seasonal openings, opening hours — we describe the durable structure and send you to the operator rather than copying a figure that will go stale.

We prefer the organisation that actually operates or measures the thing: airport and ferry operators, public transport authorities, national meteorological services, park and heritage authorities, official tourism bodies and national statistics offices. SEO travel blogs, listicles and review aggregators are not used as factual authorities, however convenient they are to find.

Cross-check

The same registry, grouped by kind of authority

Reading the registry by organisation type is the quickest way to see where our claims are thinly supported: a destination whose practical guidance rests only on a tourism board is weaker than one backed by the operator that runs the service.

Photography

Every photograph is checked file by file

We do not use an image because it sits on Wikimedia Commons. Each individual file page is read first, and only files whose own licence permits our use are published.

Photographs are shown unmodified. Where a licence requires a specific form of credit, we use the wording the photographer asked for. If a file's licence terms are unclear, the destination is published without a photograph rather than with an uncertain one.

A note on Open-Meteo and commercial use

Open-Meteo's free API is for non-commercial use. SnapDestinations carries no advertising, no affiliate links and no paid features, and the historical data was collected once, offline, rather than called from the live site. Before SnapDestinations becomes commercial in any way, this access has to move onto terms that permit it. The weather data itself is licensed CC BY 4.0 and we attribute it on every page that uses it. Open-Meteo is a weather data and API provider rather than a national meteorological service, and the archive it serves is reanalysis — modelled values reconstructed for past dates — rather than a station observation series. We describe it that way everywhere.

How we interpret all of this is described in our methodology.
