Why this month

September sits inside the narrow part of Madeira's year that our reading of the historical record favours for walking: mild rather than hot, before the north side moves into its wettest months, and past the high-summer haze.

Why we would go

A week on foot instead of on sand — levada water-channel paths, cloud-level ridges above Funchal and laurel forest that exists nowhere else at this scale, with a capital that works as a city rather than a resort strip.

The catch

The coastline is rock, pebble and sea pools rather than sand, and the interior can sit inside cloud on a day the harbour is sunny.

Best for: Walkers, and couples who want scenery and food over beach days.

Why this month

September to mid-October is one of the island's two strongest windows in our reading: swimming still reliable, walking temperatures back to sensible, and the demand curve in the official arrivals series already bending down from its August peak.

Why we would go

It carries a beach holiday, a walking holiday and a genuine archaeological trip in one place, with a swimming season that runs later than anywhere else in our library.

The catch

Everything worth seeing is far apart, and some of it runs to a season — a trip built around the gorge has to sit inside its published window, not at the edge of it.

Best for: Travellers who want late warmth with something to do beyond the beach.

Why this month

This is the month to look south rather than the month to arrive: Cape Town is coming out of a genuinely wet, cool winter, and our reading puts the strongest weeks in October to November — which is exactly the horizon you book from in September.

Why we would go

Nothing else in our library puts serious mountain walking, two contrasting coasts and a major wine region within one day's reach of a single base.

The catch

Book too early in the change of season and you get winter rain; book into midsummer instead and you get the persistent south-easter that closes the cable car and empties one coast.

Best for: Flexible travellers planning ahead, who accept a plan the wind can rewrite.

Conditions

The historical record is dominated by the daylight cycle: continuous summer daylight and a midwinter period with the sun below the horizon, with mild-for-the-latitude but wet and windy coastal weather year-round.

Our reading

Late June to August for hiking and round-the-clock light; late September to March for aurora, with February and March giving both dark nights and workable daylight hours. Late October to early December is the hardest sell: dark, wet and little snow cover.

Crowding

Inference from capacity, not from counts: accommodation on the islands is limited and concentrated in a few villages, so the summer weeks feel full at visitor numbers that would be invisible elsewhere. Statistics Norway publishes monthly accommodation figures for Nordland.

Mallorca

Do I book the Tramuntana mountain side or the swimming coasts, and does that decision force me into a hire car?

The trade-off. The mountain coast and the swimming coasts are on opposite sides of the island, and the transport network only radiates from Palma — so accept that a base suiting one of them turns the other into a driving day.
